THE WITCH

Join Into The Portal for the inaugural episode of Film Friday, where hosts Andrew and Amber sit down to discuss films inspired by myths and legends, folklore and all things paranormal.
Robert Egger’s The Witch (2015) takes us to 1630’s New England, where a Separatist family has been banished from their community and are forced to go and live off the land alone, on the outskirts of a nearby wood. Tragedy strikes when the youngest son, infant Samuel, is snatched from the family in a bizarre instance in which he has been entrusted to the sole care of the eldest daughter, Thomasin.
The Film is a haunting exploration of family, religious puritanism and the pitfalls of sin each individual endures as they slowly succumb to the black magic that is The Witch.
THE RITUAL
Into The Portal’s Film Friday takes on The Ritual (2017), a modern day tale of horror, with an ancient evil lurking in the Scandinavian woods.v Four friends journey into unknown territory in remembrance of a fallen friend, only to find themselves in much dire straits than they could ever imagine. Spoilers are plentiful, so be sure to watch the movie and join us for yet another great listener suggestion for Film Friday.

HEREDITARY
ITP discusses Hereditary (2018), directed by Ari Aster. This is a particularly dark film for multiple reasons involving disturbing subject matter - viewer discretion is strongly advised. The film follows a family after the recent loss of their elderly grandmother as they begin to uncover the sinister past of their former matriarch and the horrifying fate they have inherited.

DONNIE DARKO
A cult classic that is steadily growing its audience, Donnie Darko (2001), directed by Richard Kelly, follows teenager Donnie who, after meeting a giant demonic bunny rabbit, believes the world is going to end in 28 days. What follows is a fascinating portrait of the tensions of life in the 1980’s, an exploration into the philosophy of time travel, some serious teenage badassery and so much more!

THE RUINS

ANNIHILATION
Annihilation (2018) features the story of a young biologist who finds herself in the throes of a most confusing and deceptive phenomena: The Shimmer. Audiences soon learn that her husband Kane is missing as well as the other members of her expedition into this elusive zone. When he returns without memory of what happened to him or who he even is, Lena is convinced she must return to The Shimmer to save her husband and perhaps even the rest of humanity. What follows is an account of her inexplicable experience.
